Method
Rinse the flattened rice in a bowl 2 to 3 times. Add 150 ml water, mix gently and leave it for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, wash the curry leaves and coriander leaves, peel and finely chop the onion, finely chop the coriander leaves, and slit the green chillies. Drain any extra water; the aval should be soft but not mushy. Pat the curry leaves dry so they do not splutter in hot oil.
Heat the oil in a kadai on medium flame for 1 minute until hot. Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter for 30 seconds. Add the chana dal, urad dal and peanuts, and fry for 2 to 3 minutes until the dal is light golden and the peanuts are crisp. Add the curry leaves, green chillies and asafoetida, and fry for 30 seconds until the curry leaves are crisp.
Add the onion and salt. Cook on medium flame for 4 to 5 minutes until the onion is soft and lightly golden.
Add the turmeric powder and 60 ml water. Mix and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until the water starts to boil and the raw smell goes.
Add the drained aval and mix gently without breaking the grains. Cook on low flame for 3 to 4 minutes until the aval is hot and soft. Turn off the flame, add the lemon juice and coriander leaves, and mix gently. The aval should be moist but not wet.
