Cookd masalas for chana dal
Method
Get ready by rinsing the chana dal and soaking it in 600 ml water for 2 hours. Rinse the curry leaves, green chilli and coriander leaves. Break the dry chillies, pluck the curry leaves, finely chop the green chilli and coriander leaves, and grate the coconut. Drain the soaked dal well. Pat the curry leaves dry so they do not splutter in hot oil.
Add the soaked dal, 500 ml water and salt to a pressure cooker. Pressure cook on medium flame for 1 whistle. Let the pressure release naturally, then drain the dal well. The dal should be cooked through but should still hold its shape.
Heat oil in a kadai on medium flame for 1 minute until hot. Add mustard seeds and fry for about 1 minute until they splutter. Add urad dal, broken dry chilli, curry leaves, asafoetida and green chilli. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes until the urad dal turns light golden.
Add the cooked dal and grated coconut to the kadai. Mix gently and cook on low flame for 3 to 4 minutes until the extra moisture dries and the sundal is hot.
Switch off the flame and mix in the coriander leaves. Serve warm.
