Method
Wash the whole masoor and soak it in 750 ml water for 4 to 5 hours.
Drain the masoor. Pressure cook it with 500 ml fresh water and the turmeric powder for 2 whistles, about 10 minutes. Keep the cooking water.
Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan on low heat. Roast the coriander seeds, peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon and Byadgi chillies for 1 minute. Add the sliced onion and roast for 5 minutes till brown. Add the dry coconut, garlic and ginger and roast for 3 minutes till the coconut is golden.
Cool the roasted masala and grind it with 80 ml water to a smooth paste.
Heat 2 tbsp oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and Kashmiri chilli powder, then the ground paste. Fry for 4 minutes till oil comes out at the sides.
Add the cooked masoor with its water, salt and 250 ml water. Simmer for 6 minutes. Add the kokum and simmer for 3 minutes more.
Turn off the heat. Add coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or bhakri.
