Method

  1. 1

Get ready by grating the coconut, peeling the ginger and slitting the green chillies. Remove the stem from the dry red chilli. Keep the roasted gram, tempering ingredients and water measured.

  2. 2

Add roasted gram, grated coconut, green chilli, ginger, salt and 180 ml water to a mixie. Grind for 2 minutes until smooth and pale, stopping once to scrape the sides if needed.

Heat oil in a small kadai on medium flame for 1 minute until hot but not smoking. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add the urad dal and fry for 30 to 40 seconds until light golden, then add the dry red chilli, curry leaves and asafoetida and fry for 20 seconds until the curry leaves are crisp.
