Method
Wash and peel the chow chow, remove the soft centre and cut it into small cubes. Wash the curry leaves and green chilli, then slit the green chilli. Break the dry red chillies. Grate the coconut and keep it ready.
Heat oil in a kadai on medium flame for 1 minute until hot. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter for 0.5 minute. Add urad dal, dry red chilli, curry leaves and green chilli, and fry for 1 minute until the dal turns light golden.
Add the diced chow chow, turmeric powder and salt. Mix well, add the water and cover the kadai. Cook on medium flame for 8 to 10 minutes until the chow chow is tender but not mashed.
Open the kadai and cook on medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes until the extra water dries. Add the grated coconut and mix gently.
Cook uncovered on low flame for 2 minutes until the coconut is warmed through and the palya is dry. Turn off the flame and serve with rice.
