    In a pan pour oil and add the whole black pepper, cumin seeds and the channa and urad dal. Saute on a medium-low flame until the dals turn light golden brown.

    Add the green chillies, dry red chillies, garlic, shallots and asafoetida and saute for 2-3 minutes or until the shallots turn translucent.

    Add curry leaves, salt and the coriander leaves and cook on a medium flame for 4 minutes or until the coriander leaves wilt completely.

    Add the tamarind, cook for another 2-3 minutes, and let it cool.

    Add the prepared mixture into a mixer jar and blend until a coarse paste forms. Add the grated coconut and add it to the paste and bland until thoroughly combined. Serve with hot rice and ghee.
