Combine the ingredients for the masala in a mixer grinder, pulse until coarse.

Heat ghee in a pot, add the mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add the urad dal, curry leaves, crushed garlic and hing. Saute for 2 mins.

Add the tomatoes and turmeric powder and cook until soft.

Add the salt, tamarind pulp made from 1 tbsp of tamarind and ½ cup of water and 2.5 cups of water and simmer for 6 mins
