Paruppu poli, or obbuttu: maida dough stuffed with chana dal, jaggery and coconut, cooked on a tawa. Serves 3, 45 minutes plus soaking and resting, video.

Method

    Soak the Chana dal in water for 60 mins.

    In a bowl, add flour, a pinch of salt, 2 tbsp of oil and water and knead into a smooth, loose dough.

    Add 2 tbsp of oil to cover the kneaded dough and rest the dough for 2 hours.

    Cook the soaked chana dal with 2 Cup of water in a pressure cooker on a medium flame for 5 whistles. Remove the pressure cooker from heat and let the pressure settle down. Drain out the water from the Chana.

    Heat a pan, add 1 tsp of ghee and 2 tbsp of grated coconut. Saute this till coconut turns golden brown.

    Transfer the cooked chana dal to a mixer grinder jar. Grind the chana dal with cardamom powder and jaggery.

    Transfer the ground mixture to a pan and saute for 5 mins to remove moisture.

    Set this aside to cool. Make lemon sized balls out of this cooled mixture.

    In a banana leaf, apply oil, take a small portion of the dough and flatten it using the fingers. Place a ball of stuffing and cover it with the dough by pinching in the top.

    Apply oil to your hands and flatten the dough with the stuffing to form a circle.

    Cook this on a Tawa on medium heat. Apply oil on both sides and cook.

    I was excited to prepare this dish as it is my favourite. The only flaw is the dough is not sufficient as I was left with 6 dal balls. I suggest to use two cups of flour. Total dal balls according to this recipe are 15. I loved this app and it is very detailed. Great going team. Thank you for the recipe!
