Susiyam, or suzhiyam, are sweet balls of chana dal, jaggery and coconut, dipped in batter and deep-fried. Serves 6, 35 minutes plus soaking, with video.

Soak the Chana dal in water for 60 mins.

Heat a pan, add 1 tsp of ghee and 2 tbsp of grated coconut. Saute this till coconut turns golden brown.

Cook the soaked chana dal with 2 Cup of water in a pressure cooker on a medium flame for 5 whistles. Remove the pressure cooker from heat and let the pressure settle down. Drain out the water from the Chana.

Transfer the cooked chana dal to a mixer grinder jar. Grind the chana dal with cardamom powder and jaggery. Transfer the ground mixture to a pan and saute for 5 mins to remove moisture. Set this aside to cool

In a mixing bowl add all the ingredients for the batter and whisk until a smooth batter is formed.

Make lemon sized balls out of this cooled mixture. Dip the dal balls into the batter and deep fry on a moderately hot oil until light golden brown and crispy. Serve hot
