In a pressure cooker add the potatoes, moong dal and water, and pressure cook it on a high flame for 6 whistles ( around 6 minutes). Once the pressure releases, mash the mixture and set aside.

In a mixer jar, add all the ingredients for the paste, blend into a smooth paste, and set aside.

In a kadhai, pour oil and add mustard seeds, once they splutter (around 15 seconds) add the onions and curry leaves, and saute until they turn translucent (Around 2 minutes). Add the tomatoes, turmeric powder and cook until they turn mushy (4 minutes). Add the paste and cook on a moderate flame until the raw flavour disappears (around 5 minutes). Add the boiled potato and moong dal mixture, pour water and boil the mixture for 5 minutes on a medium-high flame. Once the raw flavour disappears, add coconut oil and curry leaf sprigs and bring it off the heat.
