Wash the yam thoroughly once or twice. In a pressure cooker, add the yam and water, then pressure cook for about 15 minutes (6 to 7 whistles). Once it cools down, peel off the skin.

In a bowl add tamarind and water soak it and squeeze to extract tamarind water.

Add tamarind water, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt, and coarsely mash.

In a kadai, heat oil and add mustard seeds, urad dal, fennel seeds, onion, garlic, and green chili. Sauté for about 5 minutes.

Now add the mashed yam mixture and sauté for 15 minutes on medium flame. Serve hot with rasam rice or sambar rice.
