Method
Get ready by rinsing the masoor dal well. Slit the green chilli and finely chop the coriander leaves.
Put the rinsed dal, water and turmeric powder in a pressure cooker. Pressure cook on medium flame for 2 whistles, about 7 to 8 minutes after pressure builds, until the dal is very soft. Let the pressure release naturally for 8 minutes before opening.
Whisk the cooked dal with a ladle until mostly smooth. Heat mustard oil in a kadai on medium flame for 1 minute until it smokes lightly. Lower the flame, add bay leaf, kalonji, dry red chilli and green chilli, and fry for 1 minute until the chillies darken slightly.
Add the whisked dal and salt to the tempering. Boil on medium flame for 5 minutes, stirring once or twice, until it becomes a thin gravy.
Stir in the coriander leaves and cook on low flame for 1 minute until the leaves soften. Serve hot with rice or roti.
