Wash and soak the moong dal for 20 mins.

Add the dal to a pressure cooker with salt, turmeric powder and water. Pressure cook for 4 whistles. Allow the pressure to release naturally. Mix well and mash slightly.

In a pan, heat some ghee and add the cumin seeds. When the seeds sizzle, add dry red chilli, asafoetida and chopped garlic, cook until light golden in colour.

Add the chilli powder and the boiled dal. Allow it to come to a boil. Adjust the seasoning and consistency, if needed. Finish with fresh chopped coriander leaves and lemon juice (optionally).
