Cookd masalas for masoor dal

Method

  1. 1

Get ready by rinsing the masoor dal until the water runs mostly clear. Wash and peel the raw mango, then cut it into long medium pieces. Slit the green chillies and break the dry red chilli.

  2. 2

Add the rinsed dal to a pressure cooker with 750 ml water, turmeric powder, green chillies and 1 tsp salt. Pressure cook on medium flame for 3 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally for about 10 minutes, until the pressure pin drops; the dal should be soft and easy to mash. Mash it lightly with a ladle.

  3. 3

Heat mustard oil in a kadai on medium flame for 1 minute until it just starts to smoke. Lower the flame and add the mustard seeds and dry red chilli. When the seeds crackle, add the raw mango pieces. Cover and cook on low flame for 5 to 6 minutes until the mango is soft but still holds its shape.
